Rice Grist Mill at Norris Dam State Park
Originally constructed by James Rice in 1798, the Grist Mill at Norris Dam State Park was included in the purchase of land by TVA. Due to the flooding and building of Norris Dam, the 18th century mill was torn down and reassembled. It was operated by four generations of the Rice family. The old mill was setup to power a sawmill, cotton gin, trip hammer and even to operate a dynamo that supplied electrical lighting for the Rice family home in 1899.
There is a small gift shop as well as information on the history of the grist mill. Inside the grist mill visitors can look at the inner workings of the mill and see details of craftsmanship!
Also located within walking distance is the Caleb Crosby Threshing Barn. It displays a handful of collections that include old farm tools, fanning mill grain cleaner, plows and a horse drawn wagon located outside. The barn has two levels and is in great condition.
